When movie directors fall in love with Tuscan landscapes
How many times you exit from a movie theatre wondering where the movie you’ve just seen has been filmed? Sometimes you fall in love with a stunning landscape shot on a movie and you need absolutely to discover where it is, maybe for planning your future holiday. And it’s not rare you find movie directors fell in love with places being just at few kilometres from your home. This is what happened to me. I discovered many movies were made throughout theTuscany.
So if you are movie fanatic and you happen to pass through Tuscany you cannot miss the following places.
Florence was the setting for many famous movies like A room with view by James Ivory, Tea with Mussolini by Franco Zeffirelli ( Hannibal by Ridley Scott, I Vitelloni by Federico Fellini, The Portrait of a Lady by Jane Campion.
Tea with Mussolini was shot also under the medieval towers of San Gimignano.
On the Val d’Orcia rolling hills you can recognize some of the most famous movie landscapes. Monticchiello was the setting for the unforgettable Campi Elisi shot in The Gladiator by Ridley Scott (again), while the surroundings of Sant’Anna in Camprena were the background of The English Patient by Anthony Minghella. This last movie has been made also in Pienza, where Zeffirelli directed Romeo and Juliet.
Recently Montepulciano has stolen the setting for the last Twilight Saga New Moon to Volterra. The charming town of Cortona get the leading role in the famous book Under Tuscan Sun and, of course, get it for the movie from the book. The unforgettable Life is Beautiful by Roberto Benigni has been shot between Cortona and Arezzo. The Chianti area has been the setting for Much Ado About Nothing by Kenneth Branagh (Villa Vignamaggio in Greve in Chianti), Stealing Beauty by Bernardo Bertolucci (Brolio Castel, Villa Spender in San Sano near Gaiole in Chianti, Villa Bianchi Bandinelli near Castelnuovo Berardenga), Letters to Juliet by Gary Winick near Castelnuovo Berardenga and in the romantic church Pieve di Corsignano. And, just to mention some topic seaside scenes, Quantum of Solace and The Talented Mr Ripley were shot near Talamone and Monte Argentario (Porto Ercole). You’ve had enough?
